Bighorn Fire in Santa Catalina Mountains over 100,000 acres

CORONADO NAT. FOREST, AZ (3TV/CBS 5) – The Bighorn Fire burning in the Santa Catalina Mountains near Tucson is at 104,690 acres with 45% containment.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department issued an evacuation for the Redington area on Saturday afternoon as fire crews worked to limit the fire spread east towards the community. Ground and aerial resources provided point protection for structures west of Redington, State Forestry officials report.

On Sunday, PCSD expanded the evacuation zone to include the southern Catalinas bordered by Mt. Lemmon Highway beginning at mile post 3 on the west and by Redington Road on the east. The northern and southern boundaries do not follow any specific road.

Structure protection and mop up operations continued along the Catalina Highway between Summerhaven and Willow Canyon. Firing operations were conducted south of Willow Canyon along the Catalina Highway. Firefighters monitored and patrolled the Sabino Canyon area and the western and northern sides of the fire.
